When I am King: The F*ckit List

When I am King...

Everyone will have a f*ckit list.

As people are studiously trying to compose their Bucket Lists, I’m working on my own version: the F*ckit List.

The Bucket List (and yes, that token Wikipedia link sends you to a page about the movie, because Wikipedia has the good sense to not grace the bucket list trend with an entry) is the latest fad of mortality, where we’re supposed to think about, and theoretically do, all of the things that we want to do before we escape this mortal incarceration. Kilamanjaro, Everest, getting a date: all of our impossible dreams that we really could accomplish with enough focus, drive, and roofies.

But honestly - do you really want to climb Everest? Or is it just that you feel bad you haven’t done anything exciting in your life? I mean, I’m sure the view is lovely, if you can see past the blinding blizzard and stand the freezing sheets of falling ice long enough to gaze out on the valleys below. But do you really want to suffer the journey up there? Why? To say that you’ve done it? Just say you haven’t done it - it’s much easier, more relaxing, and more honest. Because really, would you ever make it anyway? With all of your fingers and toes?

The bucket list, to me, is a list of regrets that will fester in your head, nestled amongst the lunatic ravings of your final days. Sure, you might get to do some of them. But you’ll probably discover that doing so was a complete hassle (see my earlier treatise on Everest). And maybe they required too much sacrifice along the way. Sure, traveling with that rock band was an experience, but was it worth coming home to a house devoid of your spouse and all of your belongings?

There are plenty of things that I won’t be able to do in this life, but I’d rather have them be a mystery than itemize them in TODO notes that weigh heavily upon the paper and the mind. I’d prefer to be pleasantly surprised when I actually do anything that isn’t completely mundane than to aim for, and vastly undershoot, high goals of adventure and excitement.

But I’ll take this further: I think that instead of listing the things that we want to do, we should list the things that we’re going to be okay with not doing. This is a list we can accomplish.

When I am King, everyone will have a F*ckit List. This is a list of all of the things that could be exciting to do but... nahhhhh. They’re just not going to happen, and that’s alright.

I’ll give some examples to help you get yours going:

Mt. Everest, Kilimanjaro, and even that small hill 10 miles away: I’ve climbed hills before. It seems exciting from the base, but really it’s just an exhausting and forgettable way of changing altitude. Only the process of taking a flight, with the lines, X-Ray frisking, and crammed-stuffy-elevator environment is worse, but at least in an airplane you get to go way, way up. Do you really see yourself spending days, weeks, or even hours raising yourself just marginally higher than you are now?
F*ckit.

Timbuktu: This city, and others like it, sound very exotic and make you think that you should see it. But when you get there, you realize that it’s just another city with people, traffic, buildings, and probably a complete lack of the coffee shops you frequent. In the end, it’s really about the sound of the city name: Tim-Buk-Tu. It’s just a great combination of consonants. So say it a few times to yourself and move on.
F*ckit.

Dating supermodels: These people look really great on the page, apart from the staples in the middle. But do you really want to spend your time with someone that focuses so much on looking that good? Eventually you’ll get around to having a conversation and the passion will just die.
Besides, my wife would kill me.
F*ckit. (not them)

Playing major league sports: Really? You’ve gained 50 pounds of pure bratwurst since that near-winning season your junior year of high school and you think you can go up against these folks that have trained their whole lives to be the shallow, money-making machines they are? Have another beer and turn on the game.
F*ckit.

Read the Great Books: This one’s easy. Pick up just one of the books. No, not the Jane Austen or the Cervantes; these are humorous fiction and go down pretty well when you’re in the mood. No, I’m talking about Plutarch, or Aristotle. Pick it up and read a page. Just a page. Now, you think you want to spend the next several years reading the rest of that book, much less several others a lot like it?
Maybe try watching a PBS series instead. Or something on the History channel. Or just call it a day and watch Die Hard. Again.
F*ckit.

Write a Book: Vastly overrated.
F*ckit.

In the end, our lives are about our experiences. Do you really want yours to include taking notes on things you regret not having done yet and probably continuing to not do in the future? Listing goals and accomplishments seems too much like work to me. Try life instead.
F*ckit.

The Jellyfish: A Limer-ick

The Monterey Bay Aquarium held a poetry contest this month on the subject of Jellyfish.
Here is an entry I didn't submit:

A jellyfish from Monterey
Was having a very bad day.
A propeller in motion
Sliced through him and the ocean
And now he’s all over the bay.

When I am King: Affair Trade Blends

When I am King...

Coffee blends will be more personal.

I was in Peet’s Coffee last week and overheard the guy at the counter pitching a recent release of their Anniversary Blend.

At first, this seemed like a dumb idea: why name a coffee after a relationship milestone? To me, an anniversary is something that comes every single year and still I forget it. You might as well call it, “Here again. Already. Did you buy her anything?”

I was also wondering, what association do the beans have with an anniversary? Is the coffee bitter and old? Or full of promise and hope, which runs out very soon?

Then I realized that an Anniversary Blend could be the beginning of a great suite of Relationship Blends.

When I am King, we will have more coffee blends for couples, such as:
  • First Kiss: Usually brewed incorrectly. You will always remember this one, more from embarrassment than anything else.
  • Dating Around: With every kind of bean, some of which might carry diseases.
  • One Night Stand: Tastes best at night after a few drinks. Not very nice the following day when you've sobered up.
  • Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Ground fine, like your patience.
  • French Pressed: Like that relationship from your travels abroad: great while it happened, but then it was gone and all you had left were bitter, unpalatable detritus in the bottom of your cup.
  • Pregnancy: This super-sized bag is quite heavy, lasts for several months, and is a complete hassle to carry around during the course of the binding contract. But it feels great when you’re done with it.
  • Labor: For women only. Hurst like hell.
  • Children: This blend is very expensive at first, but much more expensive over the course of your ~20 year contract. It’s an acquired taste, with many disappointing overtones.
  • Slept with your Best Friend (also known as Grounds for Divorce)

Things I Believe: Thoughts for Friday

Lighting never strikes twice in the same place. It'll probably hit you in the head first, then go for the sternum.

Less is more. More or less.

Power corrupts. Solar power corrupts renewably.

Strike while the iron is hot. Iron while the shirt is still slightly damp.

Things I Believe: Thoughts for Friday

I'm always suspicious when I see a dessert labeled 'vegan', like "Vegan chocolate chip cookie.".
I figure to get that label they must have sacrificed something, like maybe a vegan or two.

Some thoughts about success:
If at first you don't succeed, look around for a door that's not locked.

If at first you don't succeed, shoot him again.

If at first you don't succeed, have another kid and hope they turn out better.

If at first you don't succeed, throw yourself on the mercy of the court.

If at first you don't succeed, try to reason with HAL about the airlock.

If at first you don't succeed, settle for less.

If at first you don't succeed, pray for reincarnation.

If at first you don't succeed, redefine 'success'.

If at first you don't succeed, embrace failure.

If at first you don't succeed, pretend you're someone else.

Owed to a Belt Loop

This little piece of fabric lies
Upon my trouser waist;
Subtle, incognito, it shows
Quiet, refined taste.

It serves a simple function,
Yet it could be so much more,
For in its simple opening
There is a little door.

A doorway to a better world,
Where deeper things are felt,
A tunnel to a nicer place
(And also for a belt).

Who knows what lies beyond the hole,
What worlds can be spied?
For belt loops can do such much more
Than keep my trousers tied.

It may seem strange to think these things,
But that’s my honest stance;
A belt loop isn’t just thing thing
That hides my underpants.

A portal through which dreams are made,
A path through space and time,
A strip of cloth that holds us in
(And thus completes the rhyme).

My belt loop is my greatest friend,
In country or in town,
For it’s the only thing that keeps
My pants from falling down.

Double Time, Part Deux

In my earlier post Double Time, I argued (I think persuasively) that CNN should consider me for the position of Anderson Cooper's inverse stunt double.

I have yet to hear from Mr. Cooper's people, so a friend of mine wrote an app (FaceFusion, for iOS) for the sole purpose of convincing them of the similarities and the possibilities. At least I think that's why he wrote the app. I can't imagine he'd have been motivated by anything so tawdry as profit or technological innovation.

Here are the some pictures to compare: Mr. Cooper (on the left), me (on the right), and an interesting and terribly disturbing blend of the two (in the middle).

I'll be waiting for their call. Operators are standing by.

Things I Believe: Thoughts for Friday

Good things come to those who waitress.

Flattery gets you nowhere. Try bribery instead.

Faith moves mountains. Fact keeps you out of their way.

Every picture tells a story, most of which are dull and out of focus.

Circular Reasoning

Circular Reasoning
An Ode to Pi

Circular reasoning
Leads us to think
About infinite answers
(which leads us to drink).

But one thing is certain:
Divide area by
A circle’s diameter
Leaves you with pi.

In fact, you can use it
For all sorts of things
Like circumference and volume
Of spheres and of rings.

There's so much that
We can do with this guy;
Makes me wonder about
The origins of pi.

Did someone imagine it
From something they’d read,
Or like Newton’s apple, did it
Fall from their head?

Or maybe I'm wrong
In what I have said;
Maybe it happened
In this way instead:

A student of math cried,
“I think that it’s three!”
With their professor professing,
“It just cannot be!”

“There must be more to it,”
The teacher exclaimed,
(For simplicity makes
Mathematicians ashamed).

“It must be much longer.
Add a one. And a four”
And thus they kept going
Adding much, much, much more.

They wrote down a one
And a five and a nine.
The answer was starting
To look pretty fine.

Then they wrote down a two
and a six and a five.
This number was really
Starting to thrive.

Then came a three
And a five eight nine seven.
The teacher was now having
Thoughts of math heaven.

Meanwhile, the student’s
passion was gone.
“This number,” he thought,
“Just goes on on and on.”

“A nine! And a three!
And a two! One more three!”
The professor was shouting
As he danced with glee.

The student, at some point,
Snuck out the back,
But the teacher, undaunted,
Continued the attack.

“An eight! And a four!
“And then six two six four!”
He kept up the ranting
Behind his closed door.

“Three three eight three!
Two and seven nine!”
The mathematical coot
Was feeling quite fine.

As far as I know
He’s still at it today,
Writing digits forever
Or till his death anyway.

For an infinite sequence
Never will die.
Just pondering it makes me
Hungry for pie.
